York

Walls, snickelways, and a railway city that still feels medieval after dark.

Inside the walls, or just outside near the station if you want quieter nights and an easy exit.

York is the best compact historic city in England for a first trip north. The walls still circle it. The Minster is one of Europe’s great churches. The streets between — the Shambles and the quieter lanes — are short, crooked and best taken before ten in the morning.

It is also a working rail junction. You can sleep here and reach the coast or the Dales without moving hotels. That is the trick most weekend breaks miss.

See

  • The walls

Walk a long section, not a token gate. Morning light, fewer prams, better stone.

  • York Minster

Pay to go in. The chapter house and the tower are optional extras; the nave is already the point.

  • National Railway Museum

Free, and genuinely world-class if machines interest you at all. A short walk from the station.

  • A local train to the coast

Scarborough or Whitby on a fair day. Check the return before you commit to fish and chips.
