Isle of Skye

Black rock, changing water, and an island that punishes a one-night stand.

Stay
2–3 nights
Best for
landscape, slow driving, walks
Base
Portree for services, or a smaller township if you have a car and a booking that includes breakfast.

Skye is attached to the mainland by a bridge and still feels like a crossing. The Cuillin are a serious mountain range. The Trotternish peninsula is the one with the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, both extraordinary and both capable of hosting a car park the size of a small town.

Stay on the island. A day trip from Inverness or Fort William is a long drive bookended by disappointment. The light at 7pm is the point of the extra night.

See

  • The Quiraing or the Storr, not both in a rush

Pick one, start early, and walk past the first viewpoint.

  • A west-coast beach

Coral Beach near Dunvegan or a quieter bay you find by being willing to park and walk.

  • Portree, briefly

The coloured harbour is the capital. Buy supplies. Do not spend the only sunny afternoon in a gift shop.

  • A ferry view, if the timetable smiles

The Small Isles or just the road down to Elgol, where the Cuillin finally explain themselves.
