Conwy is one of Edward I’s iron ring of castles, and unlike most of them it still has its town walls in a loop you can walk. The castle is the monument. The walls are how you understand the monument. The three bridges — suspension, rail, and road — are a short lesson in how Britain kept arriving at the same narrow point.
It is the right coastal day if you are based in Eryri, and a good first night in north Wales if you have come along the coast.
See
The castle
Cadw. The towers are the visit. Book in July. The views back to Eryri are part of the ticket.
The town walls
Walk them. They are short, high, and more useful than a second castle interior.
The suspension bridge and Telford’s work
The small tollhouse tells the engineering. You do not need to be an engineer.
Bodlondeb or the quay
A harbour walk once the walls are done. Mussel boats, not a resort strip.
